All About Ms. Ruiz!!!

Hello…welcome to 3A!

This is my second year as a 3rd grade teacher at Clemente and I am very excited to be here and to be your child's teacher. I returned to Roberto Clemente to teach after formerly running the office.

A little about me...I have a Master's degree in Education. My Bachelor's degree is in Graphic Design  and I first started at Clemente teaching Technology when the program still existed within the Acero Charter School Network. When I'm not teaching, I love to ride my bike, go swimming or to the beach, and go dancing!

Throughout each school year it is my goal to keep the lines of communication open with parents and students to ensure I provide the best education possible for each child to succeed. I am available throughout the week for any questions or concerns and can be contacted through Class Dojo or my email vruiz@aceroschools.org.

Please check your child's folder every night for important papers.  Their folders need to come back every day.
Math: We use Eureka Math for our mathematics instruction (https://greatminds.org/math). Parent Tip sheets will be posted on this page to help support you as you help your children with their learning. Additional information for homework help can also be found at (http://embarc.online)

Reading: We use Core Knowledge for our reading instruction (https://www.coreknowledge.org/curriculum/language-arts/), which we add to with read-alouds to practice and deepen our understanding of reading comprehension skills. Some reading skills we are working on this year are:
  • Making Connections
  • Visualizing
  • Inferring
  • Summarizing
  • Finding the main idea, and using supporting details
  • Determining the lesson, moral, and theme
  • Character traits, emotion, and motivation
  • Grammar

Writing: Using Writer's Workshop, the third grade students will learn how to write with stamina, revise and edit their work, and publish polished pieces of writing. By the end of the year, the students will be writing muti-paragraph essays. Some of the writing pieces we will write this year include:
  • Personal Narrative
  • Opinion Essay
  • Persuasive writing
  • "How to" writing
  • Poetry
  • Creative writing

ScienceThe science curriculum we use is called Mystery Science (https://mysteryscience.com/lessons/seasonal/back-to-school). Mystery Science guides students through academic inquiry, with accompanying experiments. The students learn a lot, and they say it is a lot of fun as well.

Social Studies: In Social Studies, we use multiple resources for instruction. This year, we will be learning about geography, economics, the Great Chicago Fire, Black History Month, Women's History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and more.

Social Emotional Learning: Throughout the year, our class will work collaboratively to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where every student is valued and cared about.  We will learn, grow, and succeed as a community dedicated to reaching our fullest potentials. The students will learn to overcome challenges through Growth Mindset and express their needs by communicating fairly and effectively.
